Following Zoe’s post about her experiences in Japan, we’ve had a couple of emails asking for basic ‘survival’ Japanese for Vegetarians.  Wakako先生 was happy to suggest the following…

I am vegetarian

Watashi wa bejitarian desu

私(わたし)は ベジタリアン です。

 

I cannot eat meat/ fish/ egg

Watashi wa niku / sakana / tamago o taberaremasen

私(わたし)は 肉(にく)/ 魚(さかな)/ 卵(たまご)を 食(た)べられません。

 

I  only eat vegetables

Watashi wa yasai shika taberaremasen

私(わたし)は 野菜(やさい) しか 食べられません。

 

Does this meal contain meat/ fish/ egg?

Kore wa niku / sakana / tamago ga haittemasuka?

これは 肉(にく)/ 魚(さかな)/ 卵(たまご) が 入(はい)っていますか?

 

Does this meal use any meat/ fish/ egg?

Kore wa niku / sakana / tamago o tsukatteimasuka?

これは 肉(にく)/ 魚(さかな)/ 卵(たまご) を 使(つか)って いますか?

 

Can you cook without meat/ fish/ egg?

Niku / sakana / tamago nashi de tsukuremasuka?

肉(にく)/ 魚(さかな)/ 卵(たまご) なし で 作(つく)れますか?

 

Which dish only uses vegetables?

Yasai dake no ryouri wa dore desu ka?

野菜(やさい)だけ の 料理(りょうり) は どれ ですか?
