1 Meet Isomi Sensei-Part 1

Ms Isomi (Isomi Sensei) has been working for Lexis Japan since we opened. Starting from May 2015 Isomi Sensei became our senior teacher. She has been extremely popular with our students due to her detailed approach to teaching and cheeky character. Isomi Sensei took a few moment out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions for us.

Why did you choose to be a Japanese teacher?

I am a SHIHAN (Master) of KOTO(Japanese string instrument) and started the KOTO club at Osaka International School in 1990. During this time, I taught the KOTO to both Japanese and International students from Elementary school to High school. I was often asked questions about the Japanese language and began to gain interest in this field. I decided to study teaching Japanese full time and upon completion of this course, I started teaching at a language school in Osaka. This was in 1999. I realised how difficult it is to teach Japanese and also how rewarding it can be. Since then I have devoted my working life to teaching the Japanese Language.

What is your approach to Japanese teaching?

My aim is for my students to say “thanks to Isomi Sensei, my Japanese has considerably improved!!”. To achieve this, I always provide affective interactive lessons which are fun but strict enough to ensure consistent improvement.

Which  courses have you previously taught and where?

I’ve taught all levels of students right from beginner to proficient. I often teach exam preparation courses for JLPT N1/N2 and EJU(Examination for Japanese University).  Whilst working as a teacher, I was also the manager of the Academic Counselling Team. As well as teaching at language schools, I have also worked for JICA, a government run global development organization.  Here I ran lessons teaching Japanese to international engineers.  My experience also includes teaching specialized one on one lessons to financial CEOs/managers.

Most recently, I worked at Osaka Gakuin University where I taught lessons to prepare international exchange students to attend lectures taught purely in Japanese. In addition, I also provided history and culture activities to short-term American students. I really enjoyed my experience and through spending time with my students I was able to gain their respect and they even called me their Japanese mother.
